SPRING IS NOW HERE!
This is when life on the farm REALLY kicks in for the year! Winter is the time of rest: Letting the soil restore, the plants and trees are pretty dormant, the animals are relaxing and avoiding the rain, and us farm folk get to turn our focus to the long-procrastinated indoor duties. But once spring hits, all bets are off!
One day the farm goes from gray and inactive to a sudden EXPLOSION of life! Green everywhere, flowers erupting over night, giant massive queen bumble bees making their maiden for the season, snakes and lizards soaking up the first tentative bursts of heat, birdsong so loud you can hear it through your headphones. At night frogs croak loudly, owls hoot and screech, worms cover the ground but disappear with approaching footfall, and salamanders and newts stalk around for a snack.
Meanwhile, the goats having bred in fall, are now visibly pregnant as their due date rapidly approaches. Baby rabbits (kits) are born and spend the first week and a half blind and deaf; completely relying on mom. Baby chicks loudly peep and explore as their furry down now has a lawyer of pinfeathers growing in. The bees explode in numbers and start pulling in loads of nectar. Life truly begins anew.
One could spend hours idly enjoying the unfolding beauty and life surrounding them… that is, if there wasn’t a massive to-do list of farm chores requiring immediate attention! The bees must be split before they swarm, pens need to be mended, rapidly growing fields need to be maintained, gardens need to be planted, drip systems installed, fences need to be erected, trees and shrubs need to be fertilized, build another milking stanchion, build another rabbit hutch, build another goat shelter, weren’t we going to build a treehouse?
It’s also Market Season! Spring and summer markets begin kicking off! All of the summer and fall festivals are taking applications! We need to start making more soaps now so they’ll have time to cure before the markets! Can’t forget to update our events list! Not to mention our website for the New Spring Line! Time to also start working on our Summer Line! Life at Sanborn Farms in the spring is NON-STOP, but as exhausting as it all might be, it is all so rewarding! We can’t wait to keep you posted on our progress both here, on @SanbornFamilyFarms, or in person at our events!
